Embodying Space: Photography as Performance
Interaction and Experience – Sensing, Engaging, Transforming
This exhibition showcases photographic practice by MA and final-year BA Photography students Denis Colebourne & Benjamin Martinaud, developed in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery and Kingston University’s Department of Film and Photography. Led by Senior Lecturer Diego Ferrari, with Kingston alumni Shona Goolab and Dylan Ford, the project explores photography as a performative act.
Through Photography as Performance, we investigate the physicality of the body in relation to space, objects, and natural elements. This approach draws inspiration from the work of Lygia Clark and Sonia Boyce, prioritising embodied experience over the symbolic status of objects.
This one-day exhibition invites audiences into an interactive space where themes of play, disruption, and revelation unfold. Photography, ephemeral installations, and performance art activate audience participation, transforming the gallery into a dynamic site of engagement.
